Sint Maarten or Saint Martin?

January 18-25, 2003
Caribbean Traders' Camp

Our next Camp will take place on the most exotic island in the Caribbean, the spelling of whose name depends on which side of the island you are on. It is also the smallest island in the Caribbean to be shared by two countries - Holland and France. The border is wide open in this tax-free international haven (beware - we know many people who came to visit but stayed to live!)

The island is ringed by magnificent beaches. The Dutch side has the casinos, the French side famous nude beaches, including the one at Orient Point, where beachgoers do not put on any clothes before entering the restaurant. The island has a huge choice of restaurants, from open-air roadside lobster grills to the most elegant affairs. All prices are marked in the US dollars, French francs, and Dutch guilders, with English the universal language of the island. St. Maarten's duty-free status makes it one of the best places in the world to shop for jewelry, electronics, perfumes, and liquor - the entire island is one huge duty-free shop.

The capital of the Dutch side is Philipsburg (where we will party in a private penthouse). The capital of the French side is Marigot (where we will go for dinners). There are plenty of taxis, the roads are good, and rental cars are cheap, at about $30/day with insurance. It may be a good idea to rent a car and explore this dazzling small island whenever you are free from school.
